Digital Fault Lines: South African infrastructure cyber-readiness survey

As South Africa invests billions in electricity grid expansion and modernisation, the blurring lines between digital systems and physical assets is creating new and increasingly complex risks. On 22 July 2026 Fortinet (NASDAQ: FTNT) hosted a webinar to explore how to secure critical infrastructure when AI-driven cyber threats and the convergence of IT and OT systems now demand a fundamental rethink of cyber defence.

Across three live polls, most of the industry leaders in attendance told us they don't yet have full visibility into their own OT environments. Only 21% of respondents had real-time, integrated visibility, while 18% reported no visibility at all.

Those polls were the opening dataset for this wider research project to turn the early findings into the first South African benchmark of grid cyber-readiness – a report called Digital Fault Lines, sponsored by Fortinet and conducted in partnership with Red Ribbon Communications.

Before we start...

This survey feeds a national research report on securing South Africa's converged grid, and it carries more weight when the answers are considered.

Are you able to answer as accurately as you can, including where the honest answer is "not sure"?
